Financing NOT Fundraising

Financing NOT Fundraising

Financing not Fundraising was the title of an article I read nearly a decade ago by Nell Edgington, President of Social Velocity which made so much sense at the time. It's subject matter arose last week during our fascinating conversations on the Reboundog Sofa Meet-up when we were discussing Partnering Brands & Non-Profits with Mindy Dutka.

It also reminded me of:

“The challenge of the coming 21st century is to change the value system of society.”. Vaclav Havel

Unfortunately, we are still stuck in a 200 year old concept of non-profit = charity = tin cup begging for unpredictable donations of goodwill, volunteers & money as being the only method to address the wicked societal problems of disenfranchised people & rescued dogs.

Plus, we have a huge disconnect between the vast amounts of monies circulating

The global pet care market size was valued at $235.32 billion in 2022 & is projected to grow from $246.66 billion in 2023 to $368.88 billion by 2030

and THE WICKED SOCIETAL PROBLEM to be addressed

Change is starting to happen, e.g. UK Charity Foundation to Abolish Itself     Fellow trustee Marai Larasi said it was “time to compost” Lankelly Chase as an institution and allow new organisations to emerge in its stead. The aim was not to “hold the cult of benevolence in place but to actually dismantle that”, she added.

If the above models are no longer fit for purpose, then as a society we need to consider how we secure the overall financing necessary for us to create the social change we seek to achieve.

Jaime Goldfarb a guest on our Sofa said "be proud that you are charging for your services"

Reboundog is leading this change in the pet & animal welfare industries, as the global social-impact platform of innovators & disruptors.

The outcome of the Sofa Meet-up conversation is that we have identified a need, by those who suffer lack of income & resources from tin-cup fundraising.

So they can:

  1. establish the overall financing necessary to finance the delivery of the social change they're mission driven to achieve.
  2. finance the education of their community about the impact they're achieving.
  3. do away with the pity ask & be proud to demonstrate what the social return on investment can be.

We are now inviting expressions of interest from 6 for profit businesses & 6 non-profit rescue shelters to be an active part of this change initiative by developing a new hybrid for/non profit business model. A social impact business model (a micro B-corp) for the animal rescue shelters.

To create impact at scale, we will then explore Social Franchising as a means of paying greater attention to the systemic as in "Deconstructing the Birdcage"(Eyoel, Kania & Siman).

Reboundog was established as a for-profit creating social impact business.
